The first documented hybridization in North America between the Asian leopard cat and a domestic cat was in the 1970's. However, it was the mid-1980's in which there was a concerted effort to produce a breed of cat mimicking the appearance of the Asian leopard with a domestic personality.
This cat is called a Bengal.
|
The Asian leopard is bred to select domestic cats. Then their offspring are selectively bred to produce the exotic coat color, pattern and confirmation. After years of hard work, a breed of cat has emerged with a strikingly wild appearance that is combined with a domestic temperament.

Bengals are an extremely active, intelligent and curious breed. They are independent, yet at the same time affectionate. Bengals get along well with other breeds of cats, as well as other animals.

The colors of kittens range from black on silver (charcoal) to chocolate brown on orange (sorrel). All Bengals must have a black tailtip. Adult cats weigh 8-15 pounds. Their voices are seldom used; however they do purr. Bengals use litter boxes and require no special licenses or permits. Prices for Bengals sold with alter arrangements range from $500 - $1500.
