Jamba Cats

Select Exotics would like to introduce the Jambi Cat – a new breed that we have been developing over the past four years. The Jambi cat is a hybrid of the Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus). This small to medium sized wild cat is native to most of the southeast Asian countries. It is a very stout, sturdily built cat. It’s heavy body sits close to the ground atop short, thick legs. Their head is broad and rounded, with small ears that are set low on the sides of their head. Their coats are a grayish-silver color with dark brown to black spots and stripes. Because they spend much of their time in marshes, swamps and rivers they have developed webbed front feet.

Asia - Foundation Jambi Cat
Our foundation female, Asia, is the largest female hybrid that we have ever worked with – weighing in at 37 pounds. She bears a strong resemblance to her Fishing Cat father. Our long term goal it to produce kittens that consistently resemble Asia. We are pulling from our diverse genetic base to establish this look. Our goal is to consistently produce a large cat with a stocky, muscular build. We are striving to produce cats with the grayish-silver basecoat and dark spotting, as well as kittens with good social dispositions. In the process of creating any breed, kittens will not always adhere to the ideal breed type for the first couple of years. These kittens will be sold as pets to be a loved family member. Only the best females will be retained for breeding and strict quality control will be followed. Few females will be placed into breeding homes until we can better establish a consistent genetic base with a high degree of predictability.

The Jambi Cat is not the first Fishing Cat hybrid. The Viverral and the Machbagrel are both Fishing Cat hybrids. Each has emphasized specific breed characteristics. The Viverral founders have selected for similar traits as what we are selecting for. The Machbagrel founder selected for a smoke basecolor with black spots. This was accomplished by breeding a melanistic Bengal with the Fishing Cat. To the best of our knowledge the founder of the Machbagrel is no longer working to further the breed. No contact information has been found for Viverral breeders. Because neither founder can be contacted we have chosen to give the Jambi Cat it’s own name and work from our genetic base, knowing what is behind the cats we produce. fishing cat
