It is extremely difficult to put into writing what it is like to own a Savannah cat-they are so different from your ordinary housecat in every aspect. We got our F2 Savannah female Sagwa from Holly and Dale at Select Exotics when she was eight weeks old. Currently she is 7 ½ months old and weighs 8 ½ pounds (and still growing!). From the first day that we brought Sagwa home she has exceeded our expectations from what we ever imagined from a cat. Sagwa had taken only a couple of days after establishing her new surroundings to adjust to her new home and our other domestic housecat and after that she quickly became the dominant animal in the house (even though she was so tiny!) and it was like she had lived here forever. Our older cat will play and they will chase each other back and forth, but Sagwa never seems to tire. We have nicknamed her “princess” and “trouble”-depending on the mood she is in!

Life with Sagwa: She has endless energy-whether it is the middle of the afternoon or the middle of the night and will expect you to play. We have found that if you wear Sagwa out a half hour before family bedtime you may get a full nights rest. She will let you know when she is tired when she lays down and at times pants like a dog. She prefers the real fur wrapped mouse type of toy and as soon as one is worn out by her we replace it. Immediately the new toy is taken by Sagwa and carried throughout the house with it in her mouth with a low growl as if to say this is my kill. When she is finished parading around the toy is hidden in her preferred spot where she seems to hide all of her treasures. She is a very curious kitten and finds a way to reach whatever it is that she wants. Sagwa is there to greet you when you come home, “assists” with bath time with our son, plays “fetch” with just about anything, goes for walks on her leash (still in training but does very well), loves to climb trees, plays “hide and seek” with our son (they both chase each other back and forth for hours on end!), loves to sit and watch birds and squirrels from our screened in porch, performs leaps from her cat tree to whatever sparks her interest at lengths in excess of five feet and basically makes anything and everything a game and expects you to play along!

Also, I have learned that if I want to fold clean clothes out of the dryer I must fold them when Sagwa is not around-she pulls one piece of clothing at a time out of the basket and carries them off to her secret hiding spot. We have just recently put up our Christmas tree-we were skeptical on the “disasters” that Sagwa may cause but we were not prepared for what she actually did! Not only did Sagwa climb her way up the tree but she also managed to pull ¾ of the lights, ornaments and tinsel off! She has gotten the tree swaying back and forth pretty well but after two days of this activity she seems to have accepted this new object and for the time being leaves it alone.

Since owning cats our whole life we have found the Savannah cat breed as one of the most unique-the love and devotion that Sagwa gives to us is comparable to that of a dog. Not to mention the joy and laughter that we have by playing with her and watching her at play. She communicates to us by a “different” type of meow (from what we have read I assume that is what they refer to as “chirping”-she really doesn’t meow like a regular cat) and also by “pouncing” on you from anywhere that she may be stalking you from!

Sagwa’s personality is what makes her such a unique cat-she is extremely intelligent and she acts almost human like and not at all like any other cat that I have ever owned. She is the most lovable and personable feline that you could ever imagine-our sincere thanks to Holly and Dale.
