Chandar

Chandar has been a wonderful addition to our family. From day one he adopted our two dogs as his own and after a small amount of work adopted our other cat as well.  We don't have the heart to tell him that the dogs and other cat are really ours and he is their equal partner in the family, not their lord and master.  He has become a great companion to us and wants to be in the same room with us.  He is curious about everything we do and wants to give his input into decisions that are made.  He has convinced the dogs to share their meal with him and does not understand our moving him to another room so they can eat in piece.  We cannot get him to understand that dog food is for dogs - cat food is for cats.

Although he has many good habits, he also has one that we are trying to break.  He does not like to eat standing over his food.  He finds it much more relaxing to lay on his side and tip the food dish over so he can eat lying down with the food coming to him.

Chandar is not as high energy as we expected so we find that we do not have to change our life style to suit him.  That's not to say that he doesn't have his energy spurts.  He may do a run from one end of the house to the other on occasion but has generally adopted the lazier life style of our other cat.

We have found Chandar to be a very intelligent cat - maybe too intelligent.  He apparently enjoys music because we have found that he now knows how to turn on our stereo.  The first couple of times we thought we left it on but then caught him in the act.  He has also learned to turn on our table lamps.  He reaches up with both paws and turns the knob that turns the lamp on.  We find that he watches us when we go to do something and have found that he is simply watching to learn to do the task himself.  He has also learned to open cupboards and doors and has learned to get water from our water cooler.  He likes to take our portable phone from it's charger and hide it in the house.  The other day I came home to find the television turned on.  We are getting where we try to hide what we are doing so he doesn't catch on to other tasks.  We find it fascinating to watch him as he amazes us by his level of intelligence.

At this time he is five and one half months old and is becoming a rather large member of the family.  He now weighs 14 pounds and we are not certain what his final size will be.  He is an F-3 and we have not found another F-3, or for that matter an F-1 or F-2 on the internet that is that large at his age.  Ten to twelve pounds seems to be the more common weight at six months of age.  We wanted a big cat and it seems our wish is being fulfilled.  Our biggest concern is that we may have to get rid of his litter pan if he keeps growing and just fill our whirlpool tub with gravel.

Would we ever consider getting rid of him?  Not for all the money in the world.  He is a full-fledged member of our family and is as loved as any child could be.

I would recommend a Savannah cat to anyone with an interest in obtaining the most intelligent cat in the world and I would further recommend Dale and Holly as the only breeder to consider.
