Sabini

Sabini ~ F1 Safari Cat ~ 3 Months

Sabini is a kitten who LOVES to eat. If his chattering "meow" doesn't wake me up in the morning, he will find my ear lobe to suck on until I get him his breakfast. Then during breakfast (and every meal) he alternates between burying his face in his food to suckle, and gnawing his food off the plate, as if it were meat on a bone. Once he has cleaned his plate he proceeds to the nearest human, usually me, but sometimes Brad, and "thanks" them for his meal. I used to think he was just climbing in my lap to try to be affectionate and give me kisses, but I've learned that his ulterior motive is to use me as a human napkin to clean his face and whiskers.

He's also a very bright kitten. My husband and I were discarding the crust of a pizza in a pizza box. Sabini decided that he wanted to eat the leftovers, so he proceeded to try all different ways of opening the box. I was amazed that he quickly learned to open the box, and he would have succeeded in eating the scraps if it weren't for us meddling people. We quickly carted the box to a cabinet out of his reach...for now.

We love him dearly, and I think he loves us just as much. He often lets us hold him like a baby, and he'll reach his paws up and touch our faces to pull them closer. Then he purrs really loudly and will sometimes kiss our noses.

A lot of times when we sit down to watch a DVD, I will sit in the recliner. He always likes to perch on the back of the chair behind me, and a lot of the time he'll rest his head on top of mine.

His appetite has returned to normal (anywhere from 3 - 5 cans/day.) Maybe he was just going through a growth spurt when he was eating 10 cans/day. Who knows? He is still rather finicky though. If I get too much dry mixed in, he looks at the plate and looks up at me as if to say "This isn't MY food."

I've trained him rather well as far as table manners though. I won't give him his food until he's sitting nicely. So, he's learned the command "Sit." And he sits patiently without prompting when Brad and I are eating something he wants. (i.e. chicken, beef etc.) I try to reward him for good behavior every now and then. It's a lot better than the first week when we had a friend over and he jumped into her plate!
